Partners in Health

Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center has been an essential part of San Francisco’s health care system since 1872. Considered one of the finest public hospitals in the US, the General - as many refer to it - offers humanistic, cost-effective and culturally competent care to an international community of patients regardless of their ability to pay. This history has had a strong impact on the hospital’s culture and creed.

"People who work here are passionate about what they do," says Dr. Sue Carlisle, Vice Dean in the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine at ZSFG. "They work here because they are dedicated to taking care of patients."

Since 1873, ZSFG has been a partner in public health with UCSF. The University provides faculty from all four schools – dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy – who provide patient care services, conduct research and teach at ZSFG.

Today Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center is the only Level 1 Trauma Center available for the over 1.5 million people living and working in San Francisco and northern San Mateo County. The ZSFG Emergency Department is a 24-hour service licensed by the State of California and fully accredited by the Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Service Level I department to provide emergency and trauma care. Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center provides 24-hour, comprehensive emergent, urgent and non-urgent care to 98,000 adult and pediatric patients annually.
